1. Overview
Cheddar enables you to be very flexible with your billing model. Say you wish to change your pricing but you don't want to change what existing customers are paying now. Maybe you just want to change what everyone is paying or, maybe you want to change the level of service provided with each pricing plan. Well, this is pretty simple to do using pricing plan configurations.
2. What Happens if I Change the Setup Charge Amount?
If you change the setup charge amount on an existing pricing plan, any new customer who signs up for the plan after the moment of the change will be charged the setup charge amount at the time of signup.
3. What Happens if I Change the Recurring Charge Amount?
If you change the recurring charge amount on an existing plan all customers currently subscribed to the plan and all subsequent new signups will be charged the new amount on their next invoice date.
4. What Happens if I Change a Tracked Item Quantity or Overage Amount?
If you change the tracked item quantity or overage amount on an existing plan, all current and future subscribers to the plan will immediately be subject to the new tracked item configuration.
5. What Happens if I Change a Plan's Initial Bill Configuration?
Changing the initial bill configuration of a pricing plan will only affect new customers subscribing to that plan. Existing customers' initial bill date will not change even if it isn't yet billable. In other words, the initial bill configuration is only in play at the moment of signup.
5.1 Can I Change a Plan To Offer A Free Trial to New Customers?
Yes! Simply edit the plan's configuration to bill the initial invoice on a delay (15 days, one month, your choice) and bam! New customers signing up for this subscription will now receive a free trial period. Your existing customers on this plan will be unaffected because initial bill config will only impact new signups. On the other hand, you can remove a free trial from a plan so that new customers will be billed on signup.
6. Can I Change a "Free" Plan To a Non-Free Plan??
Yes, but be careful if the plan has current subscribers without a payment method. If a subscriber on a paid plan does not have a payment method and an invoice comes due, the subscription will be canceled. In other words, subscribers must add a payment method to their subscription before their next bill date or the subscription will be auto-canceled. You might consider using the Bill Reminder email notification in this case.
7. Can I "grandfather" existing customers while changing prices or levels of service for future customers?
Sure can, this is as simple as creating new plans for the new pricing setup. Then, only allow customers to sign up for the new pricing plans. You can use the status (active/inactive) toggle to distinguish between those plans that are current and those that are no longer viable.
