Support for PayPal/SagePay merchant accounts
Hi there,
I'm the founder of a startup based in the UK and we're looking for a subscriptions/recurring payments provider for our upcoming SaaS offering. Your feature-set looks awesome. But it's not clear what payment gateways and merchant accounts you support.
I was thinking of setting up merchant accounts through either PayPal Website Payments Pro or SagePay and using it with Recurly/Spreedly. Is it possible to do a similar setup with CheddarGetter?
I got pointed towards CheddarGetter in response to a post I'd made on Hacker News: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1750179
Which merchants does the CheddarGateway support? On the https://cheddargetter.com/admin/gateway/new page you state that you prefer Payvision. How much do they charge and for what? What alternatives are there?
Am I right in understanding that I'd be paying for CheddarGetter + CheddarGateway + Payvision?
My apologies if I've misunderstood anything — it seems like a terribly complicated field — but I'm glad you guys are tackling it!
-- Cheers, tav

Hi Tav -- We don't currently support PayPal or SagePay. There are some technical barriers to using PayPal, in particular.
We have developed the CheddarGateway + CheddarGetter system to ensure a unified approach. The third component is a merchant account. We do have a relationship with Payment for this but their fees are a bit high so we're leaning on them mostly for merchants outside the UK. We're starting a new relationship with VoicePay in the UK which should prove to be significantly less expensive. We don't have this relationship in place but keep in touch while we work through it.
To answer your question, yes, CG + CGateway + Merchant Account is required. The same requirement exists for other subscription management services.
Happy to help in any way we can.

Hi Marc, Do you have any further updates on VoicePay? I too am UK-based and am not keen on paying high fees!

Hi again Karl -- We're still working on a solution. VoicePay has been unresponsive as of late.
For what it's worth, I have included a list of platforms that our CheddarGateway supports. You might find a provider in there.
We're also considering a direct integration with http://PaymentExpress.com. They are headquartered in Australia, I believe, but I'm told that they also support UK merchants. You might check into their service.

Hi all,
I too am UK based and am struggling to find a Gateway & Merchant account combo that doesn't come with extortionate fees. Tav/Karl, if you find anything that you think is worth sharing, i'd love to hear about it.
Also... why is it that all Gateway websites are so un-usable... i've not found any that present their products in a logical way! Rant over :-)

Hi Gavin -- You might also look into http://www.cashflows.com/ (Voice Commerce). They are compatible with CheddarGateway but I'm not familiar with their fees.
Pricing in the industry is typically not transparent, unfortunately. There are many variables (e.g., risk assessment, currency exchange, interchange rates, etc). We're doing our best to help sort it out. You'll typically find the best rates with a traditional merchant account. The large portion of the fee is interchange. VISA, for example, publishes their rates: (USA) http://usa.visa.com/merchants/operations/interchange_rates.html
Banks and acquirers markup from there.
Have you checked with PaymentExpress? Our contact over there is

Hello - DPS integrates with Cheddar Getter via our PX Post API. Providing you have a merchant account with any of the banks we have connectivity to then we can process funds direct into your merchant account.

I'm happy to help out with any questions you may have around acquiring merchant accounts.
Richard
