Customer Account URL
My understanding is that the 'Customer Account URL' defined on the Settings page is supposed to be for a page on my site where the user can do things like changing their payment method.

what if the field is left empty, what would be the effect of that?

I currently have a page where the user can change basic account details but nothing to do with payment method or credit card details. Does this mean I have to add the ability to change those on my site and use the APIs to update them on CG?

This is primarily for the email notification templates. When using the hosted pages (and it looks like you are), the url is automatically set to the URL for the customer's "update" page.
