I want to be able for users to purchase add-on's to their subscription (like access to a virtual conference), but we bill them yearly, and I don't want to have to wait till their renewal comes to have to pay, since they could use the site for a whole year, without paying. Is there any way to charge a customer before allowing them access to something?

Typically different pricing plans are used for different levels of service. If a customer's plan doesn't allow a particular feature, "upgrading" to a plan that allows the feature is required. You can build-in the cost of the feature in the recurring fee or use tracked items to charge for the feature. Typically the auto-prorate feature is used in this case.

You could also use a tracked item in the same way but keep the customer on the existing plan. In this case, you could calculated a prorated amount for the current billing period. Issue a custom credit on the current invoice for the remaining term, add the feature as a tracked item, then execute the current invoice immediately. This would effectively "settle" the account prior to adding the feature, then restart a new billing cycle.
