Product Questions
1) You do recurring billing, and I see you do metered/usage billing - is this only for developers or will this work for a SaaS company?
2) Are you integrated into Hubspot, Xero, Groove?
3) How do you work with payment gateways?
4) How would you compare your product with Chargebee/Chargify/Recurly/Zuora?

Hi Dan,
Thanks for your interest in Cheddar! I'll go ahead and address your questions point-by-point.
Our product is designed for use by developers at SaaS companies. :) We offer an API that your dev team can use to integrate your product with our platform, allowing you to manage billing without having to build complex recurring and invoicing logic into your own system.
First, you set up your pricing plans via our user interface. Then, your dev team configures your integration to send us data about signups, upgrades, usage, etc. We take that data do the rest of the billing work: preparing and sending invoices according to your pricing plan setup, communicating with the gateway, and compiling reports on revenue and conversions.
Once your application is integrated with Cheddar, you'll be able to view information about your recurring revenue, as well as the billing profile and invoice history of your customers, within the Cheddar user interface.
It's been our experience that built-in integrations with third-party platforms don't always have the flexibility to cover all of our customers' specific needs. Instead, we integrate with Zapier, so our customers can set up Zaps that send information to the third-party services of their choosing. That way, you can set up third-party integrations in whatever way suits you best.
Cheddar is gateway-agnostic -- we allow you to choose between a number of compatible payment processors to connect to your Cheddar product account, including our own CheddarPay gateway. Your customers' card data is stored at the gateway, and we take care of communicating with the gateway when a customer makes a payment.
Should you choose to change gateways at some point, we can help you with gateway migration too. Check out this article on gateway migration for more on that feature.
Our major focus is on helping you leverage tracked customer activity in your platform. You decide what activities you'd like to track and whether or not you want charge for them, and then configure your integration to tell Cheddar when those activities take place. We'll take care of the rest. This puts our product in an excellent position to do consumption billing, as opposed to just focusing on flat subscriptions. Our flexible setup also makes it easy to change your pricing plans to accommodate your needs as you go. For a good overview on pricing plan options, see this Pricing Plan Basics article in our Knowledge Base.
Also, Cheddar is reasonably priced overall. If you exclude our payment processor, we charge $99/month. For payment processing, our built-in service adds 2.9% + $.30/transaction, or you can bring your own gateway for $.30/transaction. We don't charge any additional percentage of your revenue on top of these charges.
As far as Zuora is concerned, the key difference there is that we think of ourselves as a developer tool rather than a consulting service. We make it easy for your dev team to get up and running with the billing setup of your choice, rather than charging a premium for customized integrations. For companies with a strong dev team, this means you can get billing set up end-to-end at a much lower cost than using an outside consulting service.
Let me know if you have any other questions or need clarification on anything. Of course, to get familiar with what Cheddar has to offer, we highly recommend you sign up for a free account and give us a try. (You can do that here.) You'll be able to see Cheddar in action and explore all of our features for free, for as long as you need. And of course, we'll be here to answer any questions you have along the way!
