Hey team-

What does the "External Payment" payment method option actually do? We have some customers that pay us via check or wire transfer, and we simply apply credits to their subscription in CG to account for the payment (so we basically charge zero dollar invoices until the credits are used up).

Is this the intended use or does it do something differently?

Hello Ka Wai -- It's quite simple actually. This initial version of our External Payments functionality includes the capability to register an external payment "method" to be used to settle transactions for a subscription. When a subscription's payment method is set to the external type, all recurring transactions as they come due are simply marked as paid. Similarly, any one-time invoice transactions are marked as paid immediately. It is assumed that the payment is actually accepted via some means outside of CG altogether. You can use the transaction hook system to cause some notifications to the accounting team, for example, to ensure continuity.

So, long story short, you could use it in place of your credits and zero dollar invoices workaround.

    Hi Ka Wai,

You can set-up an external payment method by visiting the 'edit subscription' tab on the customer's account page in CG. There's a button toward the bottom of the page that says change payment method. When you click that, you'll get a box that says payment method with a drop down menu and external payments is one of the options. I've attached a screenshot of the drop down menu you're looking for.
