Summer/Startups/$500 question
About the 3rd-party extra processing, I thought the $500 Summer Deal put us on the "Blowing Up" plan, which included a full-service gateway for all that stuff. If that was the case, wouldn't we not need a Paypal, Auth.net, etc?

So I guess what I'm asking is, if I give ya $500 today, will I get to keep 100% of what I charge my customers for the next year, via your gateway? And does this include recurring billing subscriptions?
(from a startup making less than $1k/month at http://foodcircles.net)

Hi Jonathan,
Yes, the $500 gives you unlimited CheddarGetter usage for a full year. That means no transaction fees for the gateway, and no monthly subscription fees for the recurring billing system.
You will still need to get either a merchant account or Paypal in order to process the transactions.
A gateway is like the swipe terminal, the merchant account is the behind-the-scenes processor that moves the money from the customer's credit card to your bank account. We don't provide that service, but we do have some partners that can get you a merchant account with very competitive rates, especially for startups with little or no transaction history.
Hope that clarifies a bit.
Adam

Thanks for the response, Adam.
From what I can see, Paypal offers what CheddarGetter offers, but only charges for the payment processing (2.9% + $0.30), unless you upgrade to Payments Pro.
For a baby startup considering Paypal Merchant Standard (free) to CheddarGetter ($500), where do you say the bang for the buck is considering we need to pay 2.9% + $0.30 in either case?

Hi Jonathan,
Paypal is really just a payment processor, not a subscription manager. They do have a very simplistic recurring billing system, but it has none of the features of a true subscription management system like CheddarGetter.
For instance, you can't control feature access based on pricing plans, and you can't do micro-billing based on usage. A big one is account upgrades. With Paypal's recurring system, a customer can't upgrade or downgrade their account without canceling and restarting. You can't do promotions, discounts, coupon codes. They don't have any good metrics, analytics, or reports. They don't do customizable email templates for customer communication.
The list goes on, but you get the idea!
Hope that helps,
Adam

Hi Adam,
I'm starting to understand. I saw CG as a paypal replacement. Now I see it as an awesome expansion pack. Got a better understanding of your features. Thanks.

Hi Adam, could you elaborate on your partners who could provide a merchant account deal for startups? You can email me directly if you'd prefer not to post it in the forum.
Thanks,
-James

Hi James -- There are several options but our favorite is Gravity Payments. That process starts with the form at https://cheddargetter.com/admin/gateway/new. You'll need to register for a free CG account to get there.

Hey guys, if we aren't currently billing at all (still in developer mode) and buy the $500 plan, will it kick in immediately or does the year start once we start real transactions?

Hi James -- The $500 promo expires at the end of this month. Once you sign up for it, you're billed immediately and your year of unlimited service begins.
