Using Campaign Monitor to unsubscribe from newsletters
This comment was split from the discussion: Hosted Pages: Updating User Data
Hi Dean,
I do have another question. Our live account will be using the campaign monitor hook service that you provide.
However I cannot see any documentation around synchronising users that have unsubscribed with my database.
Use Case 1:
User subscribes to our service.
They are automatically subscribed to our newsletter (in accordance
to your hook service)
User at a later stage, logs into our website and unticks the
Newsletter Opt-in ...
... At this point I'm stuck ... do I query campaing monitor's API
(e.g.
http://www.campaignmonitor.com/api/subscribers/#unsubscribing_a_sub...
) and unsubscribe the user there?
If so, will CG respect this and not try to subscribe them again?
Use Case 2:
User subscribes to our service.
They are automatically subscribed to our newsletter (in accordance
to your hook service)
User at a later stage, receives an email and clicks on the
unsubscribe link ...
... does CG update my system through a hook or again I need setup
Campaing monitor to notify my system in some way? (e.g. http://help.campaignmonitor.com/topic.aspx?t=86
)
I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter.
Thanks
M.

Hi Mudi,
I'm pretty unfamiliar with Campaign Monitor, but after discussing with the team I should have a response for you. We'll be meeting later this afternoon. Thanks!

CG only automates subscribing/unsubscribing according to the events documented here under the "How does it work?" section:
https://cheddargetter.com/admin/hooks/campaign-monitor
If you'd like to manage unsubscribing a customer within your app directly, you can do that with the CM api. I think they also have a hosted unsubscribe page but I don't remember.
You only need to know about an unsubscribe event such as this if you need to do something other than simply unsubscribe the customer from your marketing email. In other words, CG doesn't have anything to do with that event. Are you suggesting that you want to unsubscribe the customer from your service when they unsubscribe from your mailing list?
