Hi,

How do I remove a credit card on file for a customer? He doesn't want us to keep record of his credit card.

Thanks,

Facundo

    Hi Facundo,

It's possible, but it depends on the customer's current status and whether you intend to charge them in the future. :) Is this customer on a recurring paid plan, or are they currently canceled? Our recommendation for this situation depends on whether you need Cheddar to be able to run transactions using this customer's card in the future. If you could give us a bit more detail about the circumstances, we'll be happy to help out!

    Hi Marcela,

The customer is not currently on a paid plan. He’s on a free plan. In the future, we will want for him to enter a new credit card to upgrade his plan.

    Thanks,

    Facundo

    Hi Facundo,

Thanks for clarifying! Since the customer is still active and has a transaction history, we'll need to have a payment method on file in their existing customer record. Because of this requirement, you'll need to either delete the customer record or replace the payment information on file in order to remove their current card.

The best way to remove their payment information is to delete the existing customer record. You could then create a new record for them and subscribe them to the free plan.

As for replacing the card, there is somewhat of a workaround that doesn't require you to delete the record, but it does come with some caveats. You could potentially set their payment method to "External" -- this method is usually used when payments are being handled outside of Cheddar, so Cheddar will not use their card details for transactions again, and you won't see any payment information for them in their record.

However, because Cheddar assumes payments are being handled externally, they won't be required to enter payment information when they upgrade their plan. If you go this route, you'll need to ensure that they change their payment method back to "Credit Card" and enter payment information when they upgrade.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions. :)

Thank you. The second method of “External” works. You can mark this ticket resolved.
