If you update the customer (or the subscription only), you can
change the plan. There are two considerations for how CG determines
when the customer gets charged for the new plan:

The setup charge is taken into consideration. There's a KB
article on the subject: http://support.cheddargetter.com/faqs/pricing-plans/setup-charge.

The new subscription inherits the start date of the previously
subscribed plan's billing cycle. So, the customer is simply on the
new plan when the next invoice bills.

That's what I needed.

Frank Koehltag:support.getcheddar.com,2009-06-01:Comment/3664552009-09-14T17:28:40Z2009-09-14T17:28:40ZChange pricing plan

No problem. Let me know if you have any concerns about this
behavior. We had some long discussions on the subject. In summary,
you can handle prorating using custom debits/credits.

Marc Guyertag:support.getcheddar.com,2009-06-01:Comment/3664552009-09-18T16:04:28Z2010-04-09T17:29:52ZChange pricing plan

Based on some more planning on my end, I actually think you guys
are going in the right direction. Keeping the billing simple is
best for everyone involved, cause there's no room to misunderstand.
Since the process is simpler, it's easier to code, thus less chance
for bugs and errors.

Besides, if it works for 37 Signals, I think it can work for
me.
We can think of edge cases all day long but that
doesn't create much value. Billing your customers doesn't have to
be complicated.

Marc Guyer
